Joe Schmoe Two

Written on 2003-07-17, at 11:52 a.m.

So, in Western Civ, there's this kid who looks like he's twelve (probably because he is). He sits in the front, and I sit in the back, and he keeps turning around and looking at me, and it's creeping me out. He's awfully twitchy, in that Rob Yandrositz sort of way (in case you know him). He brings a tape deck with him every day to tape everything our Professor says, and, yesterday, at the end of our break, asks to borrow my notes so he can photocopy them. He also asked to borrow them today, which I was not expecting, and I'm a little worried about that because I made a note of two rather silly quotes said in class today, both of which were said by him.

Since he has my notes right now, I don't have the two quotes exactly in front of me, but they were something like this:

Professor: "Among the many Germanic Tribes were the Saxons and the ENG-els." (he writes A-N-G-E-L-S on the board) "Can anyone tell me where these people are from?"

The Boy: (in all seriousness) "Heaven?"

Professor: "Um.... no. They weren't that high up."

Professor: "The primary social unit of the Arabs was the extended family. Can anyone tell me what tell me what the extended family is?"

The Boy: (in all seriousness) "Nuclear?"

Professor: "Not the nuclear family, the extended family. Arabs with Nukes will come later."

Oi, some kids these days can seem so stupid. Which, by the way, goes back, sort of, to the whole Joe Schmoe idea presented in the previous entry. Fortunately, the overwhelming majority of this class seems rather intelligent, if only a little uninformed.
