A brief first impression of this semester's classes

Written on 2004-01-12, at 1:39 p.m.

Oddly enough, I have the exact same teacher for both my American History I class and my Western Civ II class (though, that might change, since I'm trying to switch into AH II, which would require me to switch into another WC II class, but we'll see how that goes). Seems like an okay guy, though he taught the same thing in both classes today (an intro on how to learn history, period, which I don't think I needed). Fortunately, he let me leave the second time around.

He made a couple of side remarks about love, divorce, and romantic comedies, and from these statements it seems pretty clear that he's been stung badly in the past. Though, he had some noteworthy quotes:

"See, the problem with today's society is modern medicine. 'Till death do you part' used to be much, much shorter, since people would get married, say, in their early twenties and kick the bucket in their forties. These days, we just live too long. Twenty, maybe thirty years - I think that's the most any human can handle being married to the same person. Nobody wants to sleep next to a wrinkled old bag of skin."

"See, all of these romantic movies have to have an obstacle. Titanic? She was rich, he was poor. Notting Hill? She was famous, he was a nobody. Ghost? The guy was DEAD! That's a pretty big obstacle if you ask me."

And some others I might draw upon later.

Psychology's looking pretty nice. The guy has been teaching for decades, but he's not one of those teachers who uses that extra time they've been around as a reason to slack off (like a certain poly-sci teacher); instead, he promises to use his experience to make the whole learning process as smooth and fun as possible, and, from first impressions, he looks as though he can pull that off. Plus, he's a goofy old man. Soooooo cool.

Astronomy... I'm not so sure. The course material is very promising, but the teacher just talks and talks and it's impossible to take note of what she's saying since she simply does not pause at all. Maybe she only did that today because today was mostly stuff that everyone knows anyway (there are nine planets; scientific notation and how it works; etc.) but we'll have to see. Our first lab is this evening (and I'm stuck sitting her until it happens since the parentals are busy, oy) so I'll see what that looks like.

Spanish looks cool. The teacher this semester has a rather heavy french accent when she's speaking English, and she uses American idioms in a very obvious fashion. That's not to say she's using them incorrectly, because she's not; all uses thus far have been very accurate and appropriate. But they just, I don't know, sort of stick out, and it feels as though she's throwing them in to sound more American/hip. Still, she's rather amicable and not nearly as anal as last semester's Spanish teacher (but still not nearly as cool as the short-lived, cat eating Spanish teacher). We'll see.

My instructor has yet to send me the neccessary information for my online World Religions course; we'll see how that turns out.

Nineteen credits this semester, compared to last semester's eighteen.

There have been some familiar faces, which is welcomed. Apparently, Ryan Finley is in two of my classes this semester, wonder how that happened...

Anywho, I'm going to go now and order some of my textboooks from half.com, a hearty godsend to be sure...
